Has the cost of living in Thailand risen significantly in the past 2 years

Has the cost of living in Thailand risen significantly in the past 2 years?
I was in Thailand about two years ago, and everyone was saying that the general cost of things had almost doubled in the past two years. Now, its two years later, and I plan to return for a month long holiday. Have prices inceased again? If so, by how much?

Double? No way, 20% perhaps

It depends more on the rate of exchange with the baht However there are a lot of shops who put their prices on line http://www.bigc.co.th/en/promotions/category/6/ Is one you can click onto http://www.x-rates.com/calculator.html so you work it out for yourself. I haven't found it more expensive than before. If you eat and live like a Thai, it can be very cheap still. Imported goods are taxed at 27% so if there is something you like from home you can not live without, take it with you.

i agree

Inflation and the stronger Baht has made it hard on some people with fix incomes. However, with the price of oil coming down and the baht is a bit weaker against the dollar but not the pound or euro. I say inflation is about 5% this year. But I don't agree that it has doubled in the last two years.

The cost of living has risen but hasn't doubled over the last two years. Prices will also depend on the exchange rate of the currency you're exchanging. The British Pound and the New Zealand and Aussie Dollars have been taking a beating against the Baht, the Euro and American Dollar aren't too bad. You can still buy a meal on the street for 40 baht or so, beer is still relatively cheap, hotel prices have gone up but you can still find good deals (tourism is down) and public transportation has risen only minimally. Just like everywhere in the world, prices are up, but it's still a lot cheaper here than most places.

Inflation is running at about a 9-10% clip this year and has been on double digit rises for the past 2-3 years. So cost of living double? No. Has it risen significantly? Yes. Thai salaries have simply not kept pace with the rising cost of rent, food, transportation, and other items. As a tourist, you will likely feel this pinch too, but as others pointed out it is probably more attributed to your home currency's value compared to the baht.

I mean if jack Daniels is 80 proof what is that in degrees? The reason I ask is that I live in Thailand now and the Thai's like to drink this rice whiskey called Lao Khao and they always talk about it as being 40 degree.I have never heard of that in American before. They ask me what the average degrees of whiskey in America are and I can't tell them. How do you convert this? Before any silly responses,no I am not a alcy,I am just asking what the conversion table is.

a degree is basically another name for the gay-lussac proof, which is half of the US proof. So Jack Daniels is 40 degrees as well.
2 :
Not familier with the term degrees used like this, but 80 proof=40%alcohol by volume. that means 40 of the stuff in the bottle is pure alcohol and the rest is water and everything that give the flavours. beer is around 5 or 6 percent. everclear(the real stuff) is 75% i believe(150 proof) but I might be wrong on that one. anyway I hope this helps give you some idea.....

I have a friend in Thailand that has used Skype from there to the US. (I would bet they used a US credit card and address. If that's possible for you then you might get it to work for you.)

Yes if you have enough money and some knowledge of at least english or even better Thai. It's also an asset to have a few hobbies in order not to get bored. One can also engage in charity-projects.
5 :
why would you put a link in french in a english section of YA. not very smart. as for retiring here if your smart enough you can have a wonderful and easy life.
6 :
I have retired and living and lovin in Thailand for 4 years now... No problems so far.. but I think all Expats worry a little about what will happen after the King expires
7 :
Yes it is. And when you get much older, for the price you'd pay in the west for nurses or other in home personal care, you could have 100 maids waiting on you hand and foot in Thailand. Thai service is great! http://thai-la.net/visa/visa-non-im-oa.htm

With its low cost of living, you can retire in luxury there.
9 :
yes, but when living here for long time, you will like to move on.
10 :
Yes it is!
