It is possible, just as it is possible to teach without a work permit, but it is now illegal.

If your accent is clear and speak like a real native English speakers, then many school will find a way to accept you if you have a TEFL certificate. Thais expect you to speak slowly and clearly so they can follow up what you are saying or teaching. However, the pay may not be enough for what you are expecting. The highest paid is more or less One Thousand US dollars per month, at the average. P.S. = Many from Australia, Canada and the USA are teaching here in Thailand now with work permit. The thing is you should find a school that will spnsor you and they will do the rest for you, visa and work permit. They know how to do it! By the way, how "young" are you now? From what country are you from? Are you legally married to your wife? The last question will hlelp you further to get a visa here in Thailand! PS.. Get a one-year visa, where you have to get out of the country every three months, to renew for another three months. You usually just go to the border and get another three months entension. Very convenient than getting out of the country for a long time, You usually cross the border for an hour or two and could get back to Thailand immediately. In those months, you can finish your TOFEL course and you can already find a school to employ you. . Welcome to Thailand! A country you will like and love!

I have a friend who is a very sort after English teacher. In England he was a painter and decorator by trade. No university education. He got a TEAFL cert through an agency here in Thailand, all very legal. The agency keeps him fully employed on about 30000 baht / month

Yes you can.I am a teacher here and I do have a degree but it is in America. When I am asked to show it I explain to them where it is and they say "Okay" and continue from there.I have never actually has to show it to anyone, not immigration,a school or the work permit office. One thing 1000's of people do here-and I'm not saying to do it-is to go to Khao San road and buy a fake degree. If you are interested then the first step you need to take is getting on Ajarn.com and setting up a resume.Ajarn.com is the #1 website in the world for teaching in Thailand. You just browse the job listings apply and wait for your phone to ring but best to wait to apply till you get here because if they call or email you it's going to be a little hard to make it to the interview. If you have any questions about teaching here you can direct email me.

In general you'll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work. Ideally you want to get qualified before you go - it's cheaper for a start and then once you arrive you can blitz the schools straight off. The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com). When you are there you need to systematically contact all the schools in the town where you are. If you are professional about this and have a good resume and at least the TEFL cert to show them, sooner or later you should pick up some work. This is likely to happen either now - at the beginning of the school year - or after Christmas when one or two teachers may leave. Of course if the school has to your details they may well contact you directly should this happen. And don't dismiss the idea of private lessons. You may well be able to pick up quite a few hours teaching like this and, of course, it usually pays better than school work!

Over the last 5-10 years the Thai authorities have tightened the regulations up on foreigners teaching English in Thailand and have tried to make the process more restricting. The vast majority of schools will request that teachers are in possession of a degree qualification, as well as the TEFL certificate too. On the other hand, there are schools in rural areas who are crying out for English teachers, but cannot offer what the major schools can, such as competitive salary and work permit/visa support. I would suggest you get your TEFL certificate, then actually approach the English schools in Thailand and go from there. You will have to be flexible and willing to work for less money since you do not have a degree. http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/teaching.html

Hi Mark, A far as I understand you don’t require a degree to work and teach in Thailand. Having a TESOL/TEFL certificate will equip you with the skills and qualification you need to teach English. Obviously, the more hours you study the better your job prospects. You will be able to acquire this certificate before you leave or complete it whilst you’re in Thailand as most courses have a strong online component. Once you’ve become TEFL qualified you will be able to approach schools, they will often organize your working visa for you and look after all the legalities. I suggest checking out the TEFL chalkboard to get an idea of how others like you went about obtaining their certificates and teaching English in Thailand: http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-chalkboard/groups/4-Thailand- Also for further course information check out this page http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-course/ - it will provide you with a good breakdown of each course and what it can offer you. Hope this has answered your question. Good luck!

Hey, That’s great to see you’re interested in Teaching English in Thailand. Generally you need a degree to be able to teach in Thailand. This is for work visa reasons only, but because you will be able to stay in Thailand on your spousal visa, you would still be able to teach in Thailand without needing a degree. It would be advisable to get your TEFL qualification before leaving for Thailand, as you would then be in a better position to find work out there. For more information on jobs available in Thailand and the requirements take a look on http://www.onlinetefl.com/tefl-jobs-abroad/tefl-jobs-in-thailand.html. They will be more than happy to give you advice and answer your questions. Good luck!
