What are the differences from living in Thailand compared to living in the US?
What are the standards for living, policy on public displays of affection, how do people there dress, do they have holidays we don't, how does their religion (buddhism) affect their daily lives?

That's a whole lot more than 1 question. I would suggest you read up on those things since you are asking many questions. Don't forget that Thailand has areas (tourist places and Bangkok particularly) that are very much influenced by the western lifestyle and TV of course over the past decades. If this was the only question: What are the differences from living in Thailand compared to living in the US? I would say that Thailand has an ancient culture and is very much influenced by Theravada Buddhism. In the west: Scientists view life as the advanced evolution of animals.Religions view people as disobedient children of God. Both views support the natural instincts of life: to live, to eat, reproduce and develop. Responding to basic needs is essential. In the east: Life is the integration of solid, fluid, gas, heat and soul. Great living is to live beyond all influences. Death is a very small issue of living. Life after death matters more. To suffer now for a better future is considered worthwhile.

If you are not a Thai citizen you will need a visa. Thai people eat a lot of rice and vegetables. Thai people wear clothes just like you! Yes, they have their own holidays. Their religion is very important to them. Thai people drive on the other side of the road compared to the U.S. Affection? Yes, you will be able to meet a Thai guy and live happily ever after until your money runs out! You do know that most libraries have a travel section where you can get travel guides on Thailand? Happy trails.

I'm a U.S. guy living and working in Thailand. Public displays of affection are not good in most parts of Thailand. They dress mostly the same, but they wear pants a lot, especially to work. You'll see some tradition clothes worn by older folks. You'll LOVE Songkran Festival = Thai New Year. It's a huge water fight for three days, Fantastic Fun. Buddhism is in their daily lives. I would say it's a part of their lives. Affects the way they think, behave, and lead their life the same that your religion affects you and what you believe, think, bahave, do and don't do.

Please go read at www.thailandguru.com for most if not all your questons. this site was developed by a US citizen who came to work in Thailand and decided to live and work there. He helps those who want to live there with visas, etc. I find that he has recapped the information pretty succinctly. If you want to verify his info or research other information try www.thaiwebsites.com it covers real estate, entertainment and most facets of Thai life. To answer your question Thailand is still a third world country in development. Yes it has many of the comforst of the US, cell phone, computers etc. Outside of Bangkok you may find surprises, like poverty. Displays of affection are generally frowned upon though holding hands is acceptable. Kissing in public not really. Dress, they dress like people in the US mostly, it is a tropical area in the south, and you will see more people in dresses and shorts than you normally might.find in the US. And in Bangkok when the weather is around 70 degrees you will see jackets and scarves come out. haha They have many holidays the US does not. Songkhran in April, that is the Thai New Year, Loy Khrathong in November, Coronation day, etc. Religion, actually it is more the monks not necessarily the religion because they don't practice it as a religion like Americans and Europeans do, they treat the buddhist Monks in much reverence. Some will give food to the Monks on a daily weekly or whenever basis. They will occasionally or weekly go to the temples to pray. I can keep going but, this was an overview. You can read the details in thailandguru.com Good luck

East and West may sometimes meet, but East will always be East and West will always be West. But if you adopt the saying "when in Rome, do what the Romans do" then you can be living both in Thailand and in the USA, with ease and gusto!. When you move, don't expect them to adopt with you. You must learn to adopt. If not, stay where you are and don't move!

I live in Thailand. What are the standards for living, Given sufficient amount of money, standard of living is the same. Expensive things are more expensive in Thailand, and cheap things are cheaper in Thailand (odd right?). policy on public displays of affection, A little less than the US... Well, I went to US high school in New York last century. how do people there dress, Not much different, just that it's so hot in Thailand most of the time when it's not raining, so no heavy clothing. More like summer all year round. do they have holidays we don't, Yes, there are only may be two holidays that are the same; New Year, and Labour day. how does their religion (buddhism) affect their daily lives? Practically Buddhism is the way of life here, so every aspects of life.
