I think it's about $7.35
2 :
ew, why would you want to live there.
3 :
$100 per month or over is ok
4 :
Well it depends on how long you will live there for and how much you spend. This is what you should ask also.
5 :
not much, for sure
6 :
I know a guy who retired there on $1,500 a month. As long as you don't need much medical attention it's enough. Of course, if you're out every night drinking and chasing women you'll need a lot more.
7 :
decent apartments are available in bangkok, chaing mai, pattaya for around 300/400 american per month; you can get cheaper, as low as 100 american but you may not be happy with the facility; at 400, you will get @800sq ft (furnished if you want) with all the amenities; concerning food-if you eat at thai restaurants-12/day wil;l do; starbucks, mcdonalds, etc are generally the same price as us; as far as entertainment/tours-hard to say as i don't know your taste-so in conclusion-800 to 1000 per month would allow you to live very well in thailand. Enjoy! i have been all over thailand several times, my wife is thai and we always enjoy going there.
8 :
about $1500 to $2000 as long as you don't have a girl friend who draining you of your money.
9 :
Thai baht is strengthening quite rapidly: of course in much of the same direction with the rest of the Asian currencies. First, you must define the level of comfortable living in Thailand would be. To live just above the poverty line, 300-400 dollars will do. A decent living with family, 1500 is ok. If you make 5000 dollars a month you can effort to take roots here with nice condo and a car, sending kids to school. With 10000 a month over, well you can go crusing on luxury ships three times a year. Your kids to private international school, and later probably a boarding school in the UK or Switzerland and may be Oxford or Cambridge degree. Thailand and Bangkok would be heaven with Ferrari or Lamborghini with your own boat a villa near the beach, a resort house by the open national park at Khao Yai with live animals on the free, and flying lesson or even small jet plane with ten million dollars a year over. I'd like to think the last one is comfortable.
10 :
My rental house is just 130$ per month My expenditure for food & meal just 200$ per month For transportation about 100$ per month All above my calculation is base on my life and work style. I could not estimate for you. But my uncle who just heading back from us to staying in Thailand after his retirement, he said the expense for Thailand is just 15-20% of what he spent in us. Sound so good right? Cheap life cost
11 :
Well, alot depends on the where and what questions - where do you want to live? I live in Central Thailand and you can rent a real decent 2-3 bdrm Western Style house for $150 a month - I own but my expenses for a/c and water are abt $30 a month - food can be a bargain especially if you stick w/Thai food - and I am talking $1 a meal and less - of ocurse, it goes up from there... - then it is down to life style - just as any place else; having a few beers costs more than a glass of water... good luck - but you can count on it being cheaper for the basics by a good bit... nad more fun too...
12 :
u can not live comfortably thailand u mus mari 2 malaysia. malaysia boleh!

What do people living in Thailand think about their country's reputation as a brothel for foreigners

What do people living in Thailand think about their country's reputation as a brothel for foreigners?
I'm just wondering. And if this question makes you angry or offends you, then you understand how I feel, especially with all of the children involved in the sex trade in Thailand.

The reputation as a brothel for foreigners is somewhat unfair. Yes, there is prostitution in Thailand, and yes, there are places where it's out in the open, but the truth is that prostitution is no more prevalent in Thailand than it is in most major cities in the world. I live in Los Angeles and we don't have any 'red light' districts, but there's more prostitution here per capita than there is in Thailand. The difference is our prostitution is on street corners and back allies. And our prostitutes don't get checked regularly for HIV. Not to mention the pimps and drug use that is usually associated with it. And, and let's not forget the number of run away kids involved in the trade here. As far as how Thailand feels about it's reputation, I don't think they like it. But it's usually self-righteous farangs who don't really know what they're talking about who further the reputation, not the Thais. As far as children involved in the sex trade in Thailand, Thailand has cracked down on underage sex pretty severally. Not to say that it doesn't exist, but then again you have to realize if it weren't for perverted white dudes coming over and looking for it, it probably wouldn't.
2 :
I live in thailand and I know there are very few "brothels for foreighners". Its just not like that, Having said that, Its true thousands of young women go to the tourist areas like Pattaya, Koe Sumuei etc hoping to meet a white man to marry them and take care of their family, and many are succesful. Recently a Thai (He was the electriction that wired up my house ) came round to my house with his beautiful 23 yo daughter with a 53yo American (A contracter on holiday from Iraq ) that she had met in Pattaya. They wanted me to translate for them. Obviously they all hope the relationship will continue.. Maybe it will or maybe the guy will put it all down to experience and find another beauty next time. As for child sex If it exists, it's not seen, Iknow a lot of it is played up by the media. In Pattaya its common to see little girls walking by the bars selling roses, or what ever, I heard of a man who picked a little girl up and sat her on the bar and bought her a coke. He was secretly photograghed and his picture appeared in a German news paper above the heading "Child sex in Thailand " That event was brought to light by Media watch. It sells news papers and many believe it to be true. Rest easy it 's no worse in Thaland than it is any where else, I hope this makes you feel better..
3 :
do you know there are more brothel for thai men then for foreigners. think about it.
4 :
They don't think about, they are largely unaware that some Westerners think there are children involved in the sex trade, as they have never seen any evidence of it with their own eyes or on any of the many investigative TV news programs in Thailand. As for whether your question offends Thais, I doubt it does, the sensationalist news articles that you base your query on have little basis in reality and are nothing to get upset about. As for prostitution, yeah that's common, but no more common than any other East Asian country, so they are not particularly concerned. The only difference between Thailand and Japan or Korea, is that in Thailand foreigners can participate, while in other Asian countries there are no foreigner signs every were and only locals are allowed. It's this tolerance towards foreigners that has allowed Thais to be painted in negative light, as Western media and agenda driven academia have painted legal prostitution between consenting adults as something far more sinister in order to paint as bad a light as possible on men who travel there.
5 :
Frankly, many Thais do not know about this seedy reputation that had been spreading outside of Thailand, because it is not so. Tall stories spread faster than bush fires and the few exploits that some guys may have, their tales will seem like the country is just one Bangkok. I had Thai friends visiting me and they were quite surprised by this foreign invoked reputation about them. To them, it seems like all foreigners think that all Thai ladies are whore. Really. And they do not like it at all, I can assure you. But, what can be done to curb or control this when you get replies that affirm to this. There are 60 over millions Thais, so does the bars in Bangkok and Pattaya house all of the Thai women? So, it is really ridiculous and sick to hear of visitors boasting of their exploits like they had been around the whole country. Somehow it is these few people who seems to have the loudest voices than the hundre thousands other genuine visitors. Fact is, many foreigners are exploiting the Thais, not just the children only.
6 :
Thats ridiculouse,,I guess you are immagining prostitutes in Thailand are the same as in your country. all tarted up and wearing skimpy clothes and looking like whores.. Its not so Ask any man who has been here.. Would an average man in America marry a whore, knowing she is a prostitute,, I dont think so, yet the average guy can meet a bar girl here , fall in love and marry her
7 :
i think that white people who come to thailand, only for buying sex (sex with adult or children or whatever) are disgusting. it's not thai that start this reputation,it's white men who started this. think about demand and supply. if white people don't look for, don't buy, don't make demand on this sex business. then the supply will not increase or even end.
8 :
Thais look down on prostitution, so it's not a proud reputation. But Thais will usually offer positive reputations before they acknowledge the prostitution problem. The most common one I hear is The Land of Smiles, the Tiger of Southeast Asia (every Asian country thinks they're the Tiger), Asia's Kitchen, and other ones to do with elephants and hilltribes.
9 :
As nowhereman pointed out, the biggest portion of the sex industry in Thailand caters to the need and desires local men. It is just that the part of sex industry, which targets foreigners gets the most attention by foreign media. To locals, the sex industry is no major issue; one soap opera was for example about a mama-san running an upscale brothel while another was about a girl who worked her way up from a less than honorable job in Pattaya. But undercover reports on massage parlors were made by ITV before Thaksin took control of that TV station and Thai newspapers do on occasion also write about it. You have to understand that prostitution -- although illegal and not morally acceptable -- is viewed very differently in Thailand compared to what is normal in the west. Most Thai “working girls”, especially those of rural descent, are in that line of business as parts of their families, to which they have obligations. Many girls are working mothers with children to support and almost all feel bound by the (morally) obligatory repayment to their parents of the meritorious debt the girls incurred at birth. Respect and obedience to elders, trust in their wisdom and protection, and the need to return favors received are all strong themes in traditional Thai culture. A Thai woman can – even if working as a prostitute – pursue virtue and merit making. It is not the exchange of sexual services for money that makes a Thai girl “ruined”. It is when girls turn their backs on their families they are condemned by society. If they are good daughters and bring money back to their families, people disregard the source of the money. It’s just their karma that they are prostitutes and a person’s karma must be accepted. There is no way to alter one’s fate. Happiness is accepting one’s position. Happiness is being with people who understand and respect that position. The cardinal point is that the girl’s sexuality is not considered something that she has entire disposal of. It sounds strange in Western ears of course, but ultimately it is considered a resource that belongs to her family. Consequently, the very fact that the girl offers the sexual services for a cash reward is looked upon as an excuse: she has not been loose; it is defined as work. The girls working at Patpong and similar places and associating with farang on a daily basis may also become “ruined” by distancing themselves from Thai values and rules of behavior. They become westernized. But girls working in Thai nightclubs and karaoke bars dressed in long traditional Thai silk dresses are never called “ruined” just because they sell sex. Of Thai moral values, the obligations towards the family come first. But Thai people also despise public nudity. When they talk about the bad girls in Patpong, they explicitly point out their disgust for the sex shows, but even the go-go dancers in their diminutive bikinis are offensive to Thais. So, even though prostitutes (as in all societies) are considered “low class”, there is in a Thai cultural context a distinct differentiation between different “types” of prostitutes depending on their behavior (virtuous, respectful, “Thai” or not) and job task (e. g., sex show performer or lounge hostess). By the way, I don't quite understand your reference to children. This is such a miniscule part of the Thai sex industry and is certainly not acceptable to anybody in Thailand ... except to the policemen paid to turn a blind eye.

Could an American live in Thailand decently on $400. a month, food, lodging etc

Could an American live in Thailand decently on $400. a month, food, lodging etc?

Not decently no, but you could survive. You could not avoid even a hotel room. Your need a small rented condo with no hot water no air. Your need to know some thai because your need to eat Thai food from stand. No Taxi's only bus or songtai. It will not be easy. I would say the minimum amount would be over 1,000 a month.
2 :
You could live on $400 a month but your hotel room will not be anything too special although it will be air-conditioned and spotless. If you book something when you arrive in Thailand you might get a good deal with the hotel with one of their special offers. It all depends whether it is high season or low season
3 :
THB 12400 at todays exchange rate... Lets put it this way....If you go and look at thaivisa.com, under a thread How Farangs live in Thailand that are broke..or words to that effect....there is a guy who is living on THB 17000/month....and he is barely surviving and he is living out in the sticks....Could you do it in BKK...Dont think so... Is is possible...yes..but you wouldn;t be very happy living like that long term, its not just the cost of food, lodgings etc....if you are on a VOA (30 day) or any other sort of visa (90 day), except a work permit or PR.. you have to do visa runs every month and that will cost around THB2000 a time... So look at a visa run month, these figures are just average thumb suck figures Visa run: THB 2000/m for VOA Accom: lets say THB 4000/m (could pay THB2700 for a hole) Electric/Water - say THB 800/m Food- bare minimum -Thai food THB60/day = THB1800 Already theres THB 8600 and you are still in survival mode...just leaves you THB 1400/m = $45 for the month Rather you than me....would think long and hard it you intend doing something like this Edit... Agree with you Khun Bob....I would be thinking closer to $2000/month and you would be ok.....leaves you a bit of margin for the unexpected... Edit Scottie....you are dreaming mate...THB 300/night X 30 nights = THB 9000 and one meal a day....leaves you $31 for the month...a dollar a day, the guy you are talking about will have had more money stashed away...as he would have had to pay for visa runs minimum THB 2000/time if on 30 day VOA.... Edit Forgot to add if you want to live on $400/month might want to consider living in Cambodia....you might have a fighting chance there...

Depends where you want to stay. We meet an American who stayed at hotel Siam Sawasdee ,Pattaya in March who who was paying 300 baht a night based on him staying 4 months. Good Hotel , clean , shower TV and as much breakfast as you can eat. If you like Thai food then you can eat for as little as 100 Baht for a good meal so time that by 3 meals a day thats 300 Baht. But you need to have a life and do something so to enjoy yourself without company so you are looking at least 1000 Baht a day which is above your budget. It can be done on $400 if you rent a room for 7000Baht a month but these rooms are in Busy areas and can be very noisy so suggest hotel. Try asiahotels.com or asiarooms.com for best prices. Have a wonderfull time
5 :
I have to agree with Bob and Tom Yum, no way you can get by on $400 a month here, especially as a tourist. You'll live like a bum for $400 a month. You'll be staying in the cheapest lodging and eating the very cheapest food and that's about it. At least triple that amount if you want to have any fun. Good luck.
6 :
no chance i got back yesterday from Thailand the prices have shot up for everything . considering you only get 30 baht to the $ you would be seriously struggling to live on $1000 a month ,the cost of basic products is not much different to the US and sometimes even more expensive! why would you want to go to a country where your going to struggle to survive? and remember the Thais wont have that warm smile when they realize you have no money! sorry that's a fact . Either stay at home or work out a way you could make extra money like teaching English or sending products back that you could sell on eBay . the $ so weak at the minute your proberly earning less then most middle class Thais . my in laws have rooms for rent in a brand new apartment building for 6000 baht a month overlooking a golf course but its 20 minutes from the sky train so your not going to get anywhere decent in the center of Bangkok or any tourist area for peanuts , good luck mate and give me the points as i neeed em lol
7 :
Live as the locals do, that should be enough. Majority of them get by with less.
8 :
Very hard I can say. If it's a must for you, you have to adjust yourself a lot. - stay in 1500-2000 baht/month unfurnished room without aircon. - eat Thai foods on road side, 40 baht/meal drink included. - take busses as your means of travelling. - no alcohollic drink or soft driks like Coke/Pepsi etc. If you think you can stand for all these circumstances, just come and try it out.
9 :
no, that would be living below the shoe string budget. unless you dont mind staying in a low end hostel sharing room and bathroom, eating local food from street stalls and have very very limited entertainment/nite life.
10 :
No way. Just the cost of a place to live, food and Visa runs would preclude you from doing so. Why would you want to live in Thailand for $400.00 a month? If you want to live on the cheap then go to Cambodia or Laos and at least live a little better lifestyle. With the dollar in the toilet and the higher costs for almost everything here, don't bother with Thailand.
11 :
A thai can't live decently on $400 a month.
12 :
Cambodia, maybe. Different visa system than Thailand. So if you handle your visa properly. You can lounge with backpackers all year for that much, a month.
13 :
wow...that is pretty cool if you can (it would be next challenge task for japanese TV program hahaha) ....anyway, I think you can do it somewhere very countryside and spend your time as local. probably you must looking for somewhere near border of Thailand, then it will be easy for you to renew your visa. Don't give up.. but remember one thing .... foreigner hardly get Thai price.... what you need to do is bargain and bargain!!!!! try this website it tell you what you need to do when you need to shopping in Thailand.... GOOD LUCK!!!!

Exchange rate depends on the currency you are exchanging. You can use this link to determine what the rate is for YOUR currency (whatever it may be.) The rate changes every working day but usually not by much. Wait until you get to Thailand to change any money over to Thai baht to get the best rate. Bank money changers available at the airport 24 hours a day. Hotels and stores usually have a lower rate of exchange. http://bankexchangerates.daytodaydata.net/default.aspx Not everyone spends money the same way. Some tourists think "cheap" is only $50 or $100 a night for a hotel and other think "cheap" means something much lower. Work up a budget and decide how much per night you can afford to spend on your hotel and then ask for a hotel recommendation in that price range. Roughly Thailand should be less expensive than the country you come from excluding the cost of your plane tickets. So, decide how much would a month cost in your country for "cheap" hotels and other purchases and use that as a base. Thailand should be cheaper. http://www.tripadvisor.com/SearchForums?scope=2&ff=3686&geo=293915&q=how+much+for+one+month+in+Thailand&sub-search.x=0&sub-search.y=0&sub-search=Click+to+search+forums&returnTo=__2F__ http://www.tripadvisor.com/SearchForums?scope=2&ff=3686&geo=293915&q=how+much+money+for+one+month+in+bangkok&sub-search.x=0&sub-search.y=0&sub-search=Click+to+search+forums&returnTo=__2F__ http://www.tripadvisor.com/SearchForums?scope=2&ff=3686&geo=293915&q=+currency+exchange&sub-search.x=0&sub-search.y=0&sub-search=Click+to+search+forums&returnTo=__2F__ Visit a local library and check out some Travel Guides. Food won’t be more than about £10 to 15 a day. Assume 200 Baht (£3) for breakfast and lunch if you want a single dish and some coffee and juice, and 500 baht (£7) for dinner, if you’re dining out in restaurants. You can always get super cheap food from street vendors , like Pad Thai for around 30 baht (50 pence!), and you can dine permanently on their delicious food if you want to be super budget conscious and don’t mind eating on the street. Similarly, there are lots of supermarkets where you can buy bread etc if you want to make your own meals, although it’ll be difficult to store anything unless you have a fridge. for more info, read : http://travelerguideandlifestyle.blogspot.com/2010/05/how-much-money-do-i-need-for-thailand.html
3 :
the very bare minimum about 300 baht per day, your accomadation can be as cheap as 150 baht. (maybe less) and if your just eating and sleeping then that would be fine. it depends on what you wanna do and how you wanna live
