Not decently no, but you could survive. You could not avoid even a hotel room. Your need a small rented condo with no hot water no air. Your need to know some thai because your need to eat Thai food from stand. No Taxi's only bus or songtai. It will not be easy. I would say the minimum amount would be over 1,000 a month.

You could live on $400 a month but your hotel room will not be anything too special although it will be air-conditioned and spotless. If you book something when you arrive in Thailand you might get a good deal with the hotel with one of their special offers. It all depends whether it is high season or low season

THB 12400 at todays exchange rate... Lets put it this way....If you go and look at thaivisa.com, under a thread How Farangs live in Thailand that are broke..or words to that effect....there is a guy who is living on THB 17000/month....and he is barely surviving and he is living out in the sticks....Could you do it in BKK...Dont think so... Is is possible...yes..but you wouldn;t be very happy living like that long term, its not just the cost of food, lodgings etc....if you are on a VOA (30 day) or any other sort of visa (90 day), except a work permit or PR.. you have to do visa runs every month and that will cost around THB2000 a time... So look at a visa run month, these figures are just average thumb suck figures Visa run: THB 2000/m for VOA Accom: lets say THB 4000/m (could pay THB2700 for a hole) Electric/Water - say THB 800/m Food- bare minimum -Thai food THB60/day = THB1800 Already theres THB 8600 and you are still in survival mode...just leaves you THB 1400/m = $45 for the month Rather you than me....would think long and hard it you intend doing something like this Edit... Agree with you Khun Bob....I would be thinking closer to $2000/month and you would be ok.....leaves you a bit of margin for the unexpected... Edit Scottie....you are dreaming mate...THB 300/night X 30 nights = THB 9000 and one meal a day....leaves you $31 for the month...a dollar a day, the guy you are talking about will have had more money stashed away...as he would have had to pay for visa runs minimum THB 2000/time if on 30 day VOA.... Edit Forgot to add if you want to live on $400/month might want to consider living in Cambodia....you might have a fighting chance there...

Depends where you want to stay. We meet an American who stayed at hotel Siam Sawasdee ,Pattaya in March who who was paying 300 baht a night based on him staying 4 months. Good Hotel , clean , shower TV and as much breakfast as you can eat. If you like Thai food then you can eat for as little as 100 Baht for a good meal so time that by 3 meals a day thats 300 Baht. But you need to have a life and do something so to enjoy yourself without company so you are looking at least 1000 Baht a day which is above your budget. It can be done on $400 if you rent a room for 7000Baht a month but these rooms are in Busy areas and can be very noisy so suggest hotel. Try asiahotels.com or asiarooms.com for best prices. Have a wonderfull time

I have to agree with Bob and Tom Yum, no way you can get by on $400 a month here, especially as a tourist. You'll live like a bum for $400 a month. You'll be staying in the cheapest lodging and eating the very cheapest food and that's about it. At least triple that amount if you want to have any fun. Good luck.

no chance i got back yesterday from Thailand the prices have shot up for everything . considering you only get 30 baht to the $ you would be seriously struggling to live on $1000 a month ,the cost of basic products is not much different to the US and sometimes even more expensive! why would you want to go to a country where your going to struggle to survive? and remember the Thais wont have that warm smile when they realize you have no money! sorry that's a fact . Either stay at home or work out a way you could make extra money like teaching English or sending products back that you could sell on eBay . the $ so weak at the minute your proberly earning less then most middle class Thais . my in laws have rooms for rent in a brand new apartment building for 6000 baht a month overlooking a golf course but its 20 minutes from the sky train so your not going to get anywhere decent in the center of Bangkok or any tourist area for peanuts , good luck mate and give me the points as i neeed em lol

Live as the locals do, that should be enough. Majority of them get by with less.

Very hard I can say. If it's a must for you, you have to adjust yourself a lot. - stay in 1500-2000 baht/month unfurnished room without aircon. - eat Thai foods on road side, 40 baht/meal drink included. - take busses as your means of travelling. - no alcohollic drink or soft driks like Coke/Pepsi etc. If you think you can stand for all these circumstances, just come and try it out.

no, that would be living below the shoe string budget. unless you dont mind staying in a low end hostel sharing room and bathroom, eating local food from street stalls and have very very limited entertainment/nite life.

No way. Just the cost of a place to live, food and Visa runs would preclude you from doing so. Why would you want to live in Thailand for $400.00 a month? If you want to live on the cheap then go to Cambodia or Laos and at least live a little better lifestyle. With the dollar in the toilet and the higher costs for almost everything here, don't bother with Thailand.

A thai can't live decently on $400 a month.

Cambodia, maybe. Different visa system than Thailand. So if you handle your visa properly. You can lounge with backpackers all year for that much, a month.

wow...that is pretty cool if you can (it would be next challenge task for japanese TV program hahaha) ....anyway, I think you can do it somewhere very countryside and spend your time as local. probably you must looking for somewhere near border of Thailand, then it will be easy for you to renew your visa. Don't give up.. but remember one thing .... foreigner hardly get Thai price.... what you need to do is bargain and bargain!!!!! try this website it tell you what you need to do when you need to shopping in Thailand.... GOOD LUCK!!!!
