$2 a dollar a year.

How do you plan to stay in Thailand a year? What type of visa are you qualified for to stay here a year? If a retirement visa you will need to show 65.000 baht a month or 800,000 baht in a bank account for each of you. If you plan to do visa runs every 15 days that's going to cost you each time you have to cross the border. You sure you planning well for this trip. If at all possible figure at least $1,000 to 1,5000 for the both of you. But I think you haven't given a great deal of through to your plan

depend on where you choose to live here is the link for your expense http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=ie7&q=anaul+living+expense+in+thailand&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&rlz=1I7TSHB_en
4 :
You can live dirt cheap on about 200 baht a day, if you live like a Thai. Only problem is that you're going to owe 20,000 baht for overstaying your visa.
5 :
if you go into a small village, like mine, you can probably rent a thai style house, maybe not too nice, for as little as $20 - 30 a month - you can buy food direct from farmers or even forage plenty of fruits and veges around.. plenty of fish in the waters as well - so, you can actually live amazingly cheap if that is the goal... I can think of other approaches as well - - but this is just one & it would be safe and you would not go hungry -
6 :
20,000 baht a month plus visa and airfare
7 :
What type of visa are you using to come here (Thailand); if you don't qualify for a one year visa (retirement, educational, business...etc) you will not be able to do it cost effectively because of the visa runs.

if you work on an organic farm. (wwoof) they will give you free room and board in exchange for your work. The hours are long, but it gives you time to learn the language, before.

Well, Thailand is extremely safe compared to the Western World and so it opens up many options for you - - as USA - if you live in NYC it will be far more expensive than if you live in some small town in South Dakota - - Bkk, Phuket, Pattaya, - any of the name places are far more expensive than say my village where you could rent a Thai style house for abt $30 a month if one is available - food might cost you a couple of dollars a day and electric and water less than that - - but, there is not much to do here either - there is not much paint drying but you can watch the corn and rice grow. Your larger issue is going to be visa - - I think currently you get 30 days on entry... Just as in USA they do not want illegal immigrants - you might be able to get a year visa through Chiang Mai university for studying/teaching English if they are still offering that and CM is a nice place to spend some time.. If you are going to set up there you can probably live cheaply for a few hundred dollars a month - living thai style - small studio apartment - $200 - food $200 - plus misc expenses...

Foreign teachers (some with families) work in Thailand for salaries averaging 35 000 Baht a month. (US$ 1 100) They are able to live, (although somewhat moderately) on that amount. You would have less expenses than a teacher living in Thailand, so if you live relatively cheap, i.e no luxury accommodation, the occasional restaurant - mostly eating on the street and not traveling too much you could probably live o.k. on that amount. Thailand is quite cheap so you could even live for less. To live more comfortably I think that an amount of US$ 1 500 a month would be sufficient. If you want to rough it $500. As Spanky says it's not the living in Thailand which will be a problem but getting a visa to allow you to do so.
4 :
$20 000 dollars will suffice I make that in a month and more
5 :
About £10,000 allowing for visa runs, cheap accommodation and maybe a couple of months in Cambodia and Malaysia.
6 :
Around 40,000 USD comfortably. But, you wouldn't get a one year visa, so you would have to leave and come back every 3 months.

What to do to live in Thailand permanently

What to do to live in Thailand permanently?
I'm a US citizen and I'm planning to live in Thailand after school is done. What do I need to do in order to live there permanently? My parents/family is Thai born. But I was born in the US. Thanks! My mom is Thai, but I don't know anything about my father since he left before I was even born. Can I still apply to be a Thai citizen? If I can, how (provide websites, advice, offices etc.)

If your father and your mother are both Thai citizen, you are entitled , if you want, to be a Thai citizen too. You can come to Thailand and have a dual citizenship, both American and Thai, without losing your rights and privileges of an American citizen. Even if your parents are American Citizen now, if you still have their original Thai birth certificate, you can still apply for a Thai citizen too. as many I know had done. That is the best and easiest way for you to live in Thailand permanently - and still have the rights to come back and forth to the USA, anytime you want! For further information try to type "How to get dual citizenship in Thailand" and you will find a lot of details and information!

When you get to Bangkok just head for the immigration office. They can help you out.
