if you work on an organic farm. (wwoof) they will give you free room and board in exchange for your work. The hours are long, but it gives you time to learn the language, before.

Well, Thailand is extremely safe compared to the Western World and so it opens up many options for you - - as USA - if you live in NYC it will be far more expensive than if you live in some small town in South Dakota - - Bkk, Phuket, Pattaya, - any of the name places are far more expensive than say my village where you could rent a Thai style house for abt $30 a month if one is available - food might cost you a couple of dollars a day and electric and water less than that - - but, there is not much to do here either - there is not much paint drying but you can watch the corn and rice grow. Your larger issue is going to be visa - - I think currently you get 30 days on entry... Just as in USA they do not want illegal immigrants - you might be able to get a year visa through Chiang Mai university for studying/teaching English if they are still offering that and CM is a nice place to spend some time.. If you are going to set up there you can probably live cheaply for a few hundred dollars a month - living thai style - small studio apartment - $200 - food $200 - plus misc expenses...

Foreign teachers (some with families) work in Thailand for salaries averaging 35 000 Baht a month. (US$ 1 100) They are able to live, (although somewhat moderately) on that amount. You would have less expenses than a teacher living in Thailand, so if you live relatively cheap, i.e no luxury accommodation, the occasional restaurant - mostly eating on the street and not traveling too much you could probably live o.k. on that amount. Thailand is quite cheap so you could even live for less. To live more comfortably I think that an amount of US$ 1 500 a month would be sufficient. If you want to rough it $500. As Spanky says it's not the living in Thailand which will be a problem but getting a visa to allow you to do so.

About £10,000 allowing for visa runs, cheap accommodation and maybe a couple of months in Cambodia and Malaysia.

Around 40,000 USD comfortably. But, you wouldn't get a one year visa, so you would have to leave and come back every 3 months.
