This puzzles me. In the trunks of taxi's there is a tank for LPG. There does not seem to be any problem. I have seen the same in Japan. I have lived in both places. I can actually see the difference in the air, since I first came to Bangkok in 1988.

you can use lpg anywhere. just it not popular is all. up here in canada there is a fair amount of propane powered vehicles. but in the states they have cheap fuel and there isnt enough incentive to convert your car.

We can, but there isn't the infrastructure for fueling LPG or CNG cars in the states. You also can't just grab a tank, throw it in the trunk and run a hose to the engine. The tanks for CNG and LPG in vehicles are "special". And expensive as hell! So is the equipment to convert carbueration to gas. You're right in saying that either LPG or CNG burns cleaner than either gasoline or diesel, Part of the problem is that in a lot of s.e.asian countries there are no controls on emissions. The jeepneys, trucks and busses in the Philippines are usually natural-breathing diesels. And the owners "firmly believe" that turning up the fuel adjustment makes the jeepney run faster and make more horsepower. All they "make" is MORE SMOKE! If they would match the fuel adjustments to the rated horsepower of the given engines and turbo-charge them and then seal them or make it illegal to tamper with them, a lot of the smoke would go away. A diesel engine runs more efficiently than either a gasoline or a CNG/LPG engine. Look it up. Google-search "diesel engine efficiency ratings and comparison charts".
