Not really, maybe just basic Thai for simple conversations. Theres alot of expats living in Thailand.

In touristy places like Phuket,Pattaya,Hua-Hin etc. you can get on without but in rural places a knowledge of the language is quite essential.

You can get by all over thailand without knowing any thai.But it is better if ya know some of the language.
