I wanted to know what people from Thailand like from the U.S. Product wise. I am going there for a year and don't really know what kind of gifts to bring for my host family. I've been to Japan before and got presents for them but I'm not sure if i should get the same types of things. Thanks!

The Thai People are very nice and any gift that you give will be accepted. The women like perfumes and always remember that when you enter into their homes to take your shoes off and to try to learn some of the words that shows them that you respect their culture. I truely think that you will enjoy Thailand and their friendliness.

Hi, I'm Thai graduated in the US high school, but live in Thailand now. Can I count? Gifts depend on person to person and whether you are close with them or not and to whom you will bring the gift for. Generally, just bring something signifying that it's from the US would be enough. I think Chocolate, or any candy just a token of your appreciation would be nice. Don't sweat on it.

For Thai people, friendship is more important than anythingelse. Anyway, if you want to give them is nice too. Give them souvenior that can be identified as from USA, don't have to be expensive. Be modest with Thai people and give respect to their cultures and traditions. Learn to speak some easy popular thai words, you will get many nice Thai friend in a short time. Have a nice time.

They like name brand items. Especially clothes made in the US, if it is possible to find anything made in the US anymore. But if you don't take any gifts, if will not matter to the Thais.

Hi, Thais are always curious about people way of life in other countries. So if you can bring some gifts typical of where you come from like your sate souvenirs, pins etc these will be welcome. Anything about your state or country history will do too. You can also consider bring in some snacks like homemade chocolates or candies for them. Some fruits in season may be nice too. They will appreciate anything you bring. They will treasure your friendship over any physical gifts anyway. Have fun and enjoy your stay.

I think USA food items are a good idea - maybe a bottle of champagne, sweets, or candy. I personally try to give things that one cannot get in Thailand - I know, this is becoming increasingly difficult now.

Thai people are so nice. They will be happy with any gift you give them and they are just like americans(as far as that goes) so they all have different tastes and I have been to Thailand many times but I can't think of any one thing they really like. Thais are very fascinated with USA pop culture I've noticed though. If there are young people in the house, you may want to find out what kind of music they listen to and get them something having to do with that. Alot of thais in their teens and early 20s are obsessed with american hip hop. But Ive met many thais who are into american punk rock too so it all depends. I saw eminem billboards and heard his music everywhere I go so alot of them are really crazy about him. But thais value friendship and being polite more than anything. I am going back to Thailand to live as soon as I get some more money saved up, but probably only for 6 months, Im really jealous that you get to have that opportunity to stay for a year, I couldn't think of a more fun country for you to visit. You will really love it.

There really is not too much that you cannot get over here.. I liked the idea of something personal like a souvenier from your nearest tourist area even though it is probably made in china.. I am from USA but live here now.. when I go back, my wife no longer asks for anything special.. I buy a few inexpensive bags of milky ways and hershey chocolates for the kids, but you can get that here now too.. so, even if you just show up with a bag of fruit from the local produce stand, they will be happy... I have written a short and simple language guide to help people get started and I would be glad to forward it along if you email me.. Enjoy your stay

Whatever you give them, They will like it. Thais is very nice and gentle. When come to Thailand, you may need to learn a bit of their culture like saying "Sawasdee Ka" and Wai to pay respect to the one who is older than you.

don't take perfume.....you will be saying to the giftee,'you smell'.....cosmetics would be better for a woman,a bottle of Jack D better than scotch( scotch isn't american).younger people like sports gear especially from your local team.Anything from you will be taken with thanks the more personal the better.Don't get too hung up about it.Incidentally ...don't be disappointed with your friends reaction to your gift, thai's normally don't show much reaction when given anything...it's considered rude to make a fuss,or indeed even open their gift in front of the giver. This doesn't mean they don't appreciate what they are given, far from it.Give from the heart,it doesn't matter what.People are pretty much the same anywhere in the world

anything USA made. when I asked my cousins what they wanted from the US they said "M & Ms". I asked them why because I thought they had them over there too. They said that they have them, but they are really expensive! So buy them USA candy! or any USA brand item because everything USA made that they have over there is heavily taxed!
